Average warmth Monday, then colder again for midweek

As shown on this graphic the middle of January is typically the coldest time of year for Mecklenburg county (at the yellow star):

The average high temperature locally for the second week of January is right around 50º. Coincidentally that's today's (Monday's) forecast high. It's been so chilly recently that this level of warmth may feel balmy...but don't get used to it.

Clouds this morning will give way to sunnier skies this afternoon accompanied by a westerly breeze. This is all ahead of a dry cold front which will cross the county after dark this evening. Tuesday will thus be somewhat cooler despite continued clear skies, with local thermometers topping out only around 40º after morning readings in the low 20s.

Another dry cold will then push through Tuesday evening, reinforcing the cold air with another blast of Arctic air. Wednesday looks to be the coldest day of the week, featuring morning lows in the teens followed by afternoon highs only in the mid-30s.

As the work week progresses a brief warmup will ensue with the chance of rain - yes, liquid rain - over the weekend. Then, possibly the coldest air of the winter arrives next week. It'll be important to keep an eye on any moisture merging with that cold air, but it's way too early to forecast any frozen precipitation.
