Temperatures around Mecklenburg county this Sunday morning are rather frigid, with Chase City "winning" the lowest value at 19 degrees. Given the Arctic airmass in place this afternoon's highs will struggle to reach the upper 30s even under full sunshine. That's roughly 15 degrees below the average for this date.
Monday morning looks to be even colder, with many local thermometers likely to dive into the teens by sunrise. The core of the coldest air will then begin to lift out of the region tomorrow, allowing afternoon temperatures to creep upward to the low 40s. Tuesday - Christmas Eve - will also begin chilly, with a couple of forecast models hinting at an area of precipitation scooting across northern North Carolina. Thus, don't be surprised by a brief wintry mix early Tuesday morning.
By Tuesday afternoon a more seasonal airmass will be in place, with afternoon highs near or above the 50 degree mark. That temperature regime will hold true for the remainder of the upcoming week, including Christmas Day. Most days will feature some sunshine, even with another cold air damming regime setting up by midweek.
No substantial precipitation is in the forecast until Friday night. The main storm track is still well to the north as shown on this forecast graphic:
