Cooler for the weekend, with rain expected late Sunday

Abnormal November warmth will subside as the Veterans' Day weekend progresses. Meanwhile today (Friday) will feature mid-70s for afternoon highs under mostly sunny skies across Mecklenburg county. A weak cold front located south of the Virginia / North Carolina border will continue to sag southward, allowing cooler air to seep into the region.

On Saturday that cooler air mass will be in place, with the morning starting out in the mid-40s before local thermometers climb to their afternoon maximums in the low 60s. Northeasterly breezes will stir the air enough to keep things feeling cool despite bright sunshine. Then tomorrow night clouds will filter back into the area ahead of the next cold front.

This next system will bring more moisture along with it than has been the case in recent weeks. Sunday looks to be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers after lunch. Temperatures will top out in the mid-60s during the afternoon. Rain will then become more likely after sunset, accumulating up to a quarter-inch in county rain gauges by Monday morning as shown on this forecast graphic:

This precipitation event will help but won't put much of a dent in the growing dry conditions. This week's Drought Monitor has all of the Old Dominion under at least an "Abnormally Dry" designation. And a strip of territory along and east of I-95 is showing either "Moderate" or "Severe" drought. Hopefully a pattern change will arrive soon and usher in more beneficial rainfall.
