Sunny Wednesday, but clouds move in for the end of the week

Mecklenburg county began today - Wednesday - with low temperatures in the mid-50s. Those readings will climb into the low 80s again this afternoon as high pressure remains in control. The center of that system will slide off the New England coast tonight and clouds will begin to encroach on the area.

The clouds will be thanks to easterly winds ushering in low level Atlantic moisture plus the slow approach of moisture from Hurricane Francine. The upper level clouds visible to the south this morning are from that tropical cyclone, the center of which is approaching the Louisiana coast as this is being written.

Thursday will feature partly sunny skies, with temperatures ranging from morning lows again in the mid-50s to afternoon highs near the 80 degree mark. By tomorrow night skies will be mostly cloudy, with Friday looking overcast with a slight chance of light showers late in the day. Francine's track has shifted east a bit, but rain from its remnants will have a tough time reaching southern Virginia given the very dry air in place.

But the locally dry conditions may be alleviated a bit next week. This National Hurricane Center seven day outlook shows an area of disturbed weather just off the southeastern U.S. coastline.

That may or may not develop into a tropical system, but it certainly looks as if it will bring some decent rainfall sometime early next week. Meanwhile we'll all need to keep an eye on the suddenly busy Atlantic. This period in September is literally the average peak of the hurricane season!
