Another week of "Chamber of Commerce" weather

The cold front which passed through Saturday afternoon only brought scattered light rain to northern parts of Mecklenburg county. The cooler and drier air which ushered in behind that boundary resulted in Sunday morning temperatures dropping to near the 50 degree mark. The minimum of 49 degrees at the Chase City Municipal airport won the chilliest location prize among the local airport readings.

High pressure is now in charge of local weather conditions and will remain so throughout the upcoming work week. Each day looks to feature cool mornings, sunny skies, and afternoon highs which will gradually warm into the low 80s by midweek. That's right around the average at this point in September. The next rain chance will hold off until Saturday.

The cause of that next rain event will at least partly attributable to the remnants of a tropical system which looks likely to form during the next couple of days in the western Gulf of Mexico. That system - which would be named Francine - is a harbinger of the Atlantic tropical season perhaps finally waking up after several quiet weeks. This National Hurricane Center map shows that system plus a couple others out over the open Atlantic waters:

Regardless of whether that western Gulf system strengthens into a tropical storm its moisture will get caught up by the jet stream and drift eastward by next weekend. After a dry summer tropical systems (or their remnants) are often the main hope for drought-busting rainfall in the Mid-Atlantic states.
