The work week begins hot and sticky ahead of Debby's influence

All East Coast eyes are on Hurricane Debby, which is making landfall on the western Florida coast this Monday morning. Ahead of that storm Mecklenburg county will begin the work week with typical hot and humid August weather. This map shows this morning's dew point temperatures, with the green dotted line delineating a dew point boundary just east of the Blue Ridge mountains. Stickier air (dew points >70 degrees) overlies the Piedmont and coastal plain of Virginia while areas along and west of the Blue Ridge enjoy somewhat drier air this morning.

Mecklenburg county temperatures which began the morning in the low 70s will climb to the low 90s this afternoon under partly sunny skies. These temperatures coupled with the high dew points will cause the heat index to soar above the triple digit mark in many places once again today. Folks outdoors should be mindful of this, taking frequent breaks and drinking plenty of fluids to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Tuesday looks to begin with morning temperatures again in the low 70s around the county. Skies will be partly sunny during the first half of the day, but clouds ahead of Debby will fill in as the day progresses. Afternoon temperatures will top out near 90 degrees, while showers and thunderstorms will become more likely during the evening and overnight hours.

The main influence of Debby's remnants will arrive locally as showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday, potentially lasting through the upcoming weekend. Precipitation amounts could total several inches, ratcheting up concerns about flooding. Wednesday's blogpost will look at further details.
