A hot Friday followed by a damp weekend

Today - Friday - looks to be the hottest day of this week in Mecklenburg county. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory beginning at 10 o'clock this morning and lasting until 8:00 p.m. this evening. Air temperatures will top out in the mid-90s while dew points remain in the miserably sticky mid-70s. That combination results in a heat index (how it actually feels to us) over 105 degrees. Folks should take extra care today to take breaks in cool locations and drink plenty of fluids.

There could be some scattered showers and storms today, but that coverage will be greater on Saturday as yet another "cold" front crosses the Appalachian mountains and stalls across Virginia. The local area is under a slight risk for excessive rainfall (i.e. flash flooding is possible) tomorrow as shown on the left panel of this graphic:

The right panel shows the total expected rainfall this weekend, but it won't be raining all the time. In fact both Saturday and Sunday look to be at least partly sunny with afternoon temperatures reaching the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. Saturday may also feature some strong to severe thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening hours, so be alert to changing conditions and keep those weather warning sources handy.

Also, in what could be a very busy Atlantic hurricane season there is a current buzz about tropical development in the Caribbean. Thus this reminder to not get caught up in the social media hype which tends to occur about such things. Follow the National Hurricane Center's forecasts and listen to local National Weather Service and broadcast media guidance for the realistic situation.
