The week ahead: hot, sticky, and another stalling "cold" front

Fortunately the dry conditions around Mecklenburg county were alleviated somewhat by this past Friday's rain. Unfortunately the rain fell in torrents, ranging from 2.84" of liquid (Clarksville) to 0.95" (South Hill). When that rate of precipitation interacts with the hard dry ground a lot of runoff occurs, leading to the flooding which was seen around the county.

Today - Sunday - local thermometers will climb back into the mid-90s under sunny skies. That old stalled front which was mostly responsible for the rain is dissipating just east of the Blue Ridge mountains. There may be a few widely scattered showers and storms this afternoon, but most locales will remain dry, sticky, and hot.

The first half of the work week then looks to be even hotter, with afternoon temperatures approaching and likely exceeding 100 degrees. Expect more Heat Advisories to be issued by the National Weather Service for Monday and Tuesday. Later in the week another "cold" front will cross the mountains and stall out across the region again, creating the potential for more heavy rain.

This graphic illustrates the weather hazards anticipated over the next several days:

The good news is that a break in the torrid conditions looks to follow this next front. This is the temperature outlook for next weekend into the following week:

So hang on through this week's heat and await the cooler than July average temperatures for next weekend!
