Another Heat Advisory Wednesday accompanied by showers and storms

The heat and humidity around Mecklenburg county won't take a break today (Wednesday). Temperatures began this morning in the mid-70s and look to climb back into the low 90s this afternoon. With the continued jungle-like dew points the heat index will top out well above 100 degrees today. The National Weather Service has already issued a Heat Advisory from 11:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. this evening.

This graphic is a reminder of precautions to take under these extreme conditions:

A modicum of relief is on the way in the form of a weakening "cold" front which will reach the county this evening. Ahead of it showers and a few scattered thunderstorms will dot the landscape with a bit of rain. The main benefit from this front will be the slightly drier air following it as dew points drop into the upper 60s by dawn Thursday.

Tomorrow's temperatures will again top out in the low 90s but the lower dew points will tamp down the heat index below the triple digit mark. That frontal boundary will stall out near the coast and then retrograde - i.e. push back west - during the day Thursday. Tomorrow will thus start mostly sunny but clouds will increase during the afternoon as that frontal boundary nears the I-85 corridor once again.

Showers and storms will become more numerous Thursday evening, with Friday looking to bring cooler temperatures and very wet conditions to Mecklenburg county. Friday morning's blogpost will take a look at the details but at least an inch of rain is expected, which will help counter the drought conditions.
