A refreshing start to July

Welcome to the second half of 2024! This Monday morning - July 1st - both temperatures and dew points are down considerably from Sunday's readings. That's thanks to a "cold" front which pushed through Mecklenburg county just before 4:30 a.m. this morning. The heat index which reached a dangerous 110 degrees at South Hill Sunday afternoon is not in play today.

South Hill was also the recipient of over an inch of rain from Sunday's thunderstorms. Unfortunately much of the rest of Mecklenburg county missed that chance of rain and remained bone dry. The next chance of showers and storms won't arrive until at least Friday of this week.

Meanwhile high temperatures today will climb only to the low 80s, accompanied by very comfortable dew points. Northerly winds will stir the air and make Monday a "Chamber of Commerce" day, especially after the morning clouds clear out. Tonight those thermometer readings will drop into the upper 50s in many locales for some nice sleeping weather. Tuesday's weather looks similar with afternoon highs topping out in the mid-80s.

This break won't last long, however. By Independence Day the mid- and upper 90s will be back along with more soggy humidity. And in the meantime the Atlantic basin hurricane season is in full swing at this point. Nothing is threatening the East Coast in the near future, but this forecast graphic shows the scope of tropical activity over the next 7 days:

Breaking the current drought here in Virginia may require tropical remnants to plow across and drench the Old Dominion later this summer. Let's hope nothing drastic occurs should that happen.
