An unsettled weekend to end June

High pressure centered over New England will usher in breezes out of the east today (Friday). After some morning low clouds around Mecklenburg county skies will become mostly sunny. Temperatures which began the day in the upper 60s will top out near the 90 degree mark. With dew points in the mid-60s humidity levels will be "relatively comfortable" (hey, it IS summer after all).

That high pressure looks to slide off the East Coast tonight, allowing winds locally to swing around out of the south for Saturday. That will bring more heat and humidity into the area tomorrow, with temperatures climbing back into the low 90s as dew points rise above the 70 degree mark. Heat indices may reach the triple digit mark during the afternoon hours, but that could be tempered by widely scattered showers and storms.

The chance of showers will continue Saturday night, becoming more likely on Sunday afternoon as another "cold" front pushes across the mountains to the west. As a result of that boundary plowing into the hot sticky air mass east of the Blue Ridge the Storm Prediction Center has Mecklenburg county under a Marginal Risk - level 1 of 5 - for severe weather on Sunday. Thermometers will top out in the mid-90s, with heat index values climbing above the 100 degree mark before storms arrive.

And with the mention of weekend thunderstorms here's a final reminder that this week has been Lightning Safety Awareness Week. These two graphic panels dispel several myths about lightning:
