Literally and figuratively the entire world has been buzzing about Friday night's auroral displays. The incredible coloring was visible across Mecklenburg county as well, but mainly via long exposures and night mode on cameras and smartphones. Visually, the Mark 1 eyeball could pick out the light pillars but the vibrancy of the colors was elusive. According to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center there may be another round tonight (Sunday).
Today will be sunny and seasonable, with temperatures climbing from morning lows of 50 degrees to afternoon highs in the mid-70s. Northwesterly winds will gust up to 20 mph behind the cold front which passed through during the wee hours this morning. Skies will continue to be clear tonight, but aurora watchers may need to throw on a jacket as temperatures will drop quickly after sunset in this dry air.The work week looks to continue with seasonable temperatures. After another sunny day Monday the midweek period will be unsettled, with both Tuesday and Wednesday looking cloudy and wet. Thursday will bring a break in the action, but Friday into Saturday looks damp again. Some of this week's rain could arrive via thunderstorms, but it's too early to tell whether severe weather will occur locally.
Happy Mothers' Day!
