A windy mid-April weekend

Yesterday's storms didn't produce as much damage (thankfully) around Mecklenburg county as they could have. Stable air limited the "juice" available to create severe storms, so the area was just treated to a rainy day with gusty southerly winds. As this blog is written on Friday morning the rain from the larger storm system is pushing northeastward across Virginia's Northern Neck.

That storm system is located over the Great Lakes region as shown here:

This very busy surface weather map shows a warm front, two cold fronts, and several troughs, which are basically weak cold fronts pinwheeling around the low pressure. The thin black lines are isobars (lines of equal pressure), and their tightly packed nature indicates a strong wind field around the surface low (red "L"). That wind field will be a factor in Mecklenburg county today and through the weekend.

Temperatures this afternoon will top out in the mid-60s, several degrees below the mid-April average. Westerly winds will blow at 15-20 mph with periodic gusts over 30 mph. Skies will be mostly sunny, but as several troughs shown in the above graphic sweep across Virginia clouds and showers are possible at times.

As that low pressure pulls further northward into Canada Saturday looks to be sunny locally with few clouds and no rain chances. It will remain breezy however, with steady west winds gusting over 30 mph again. After morning lows in the upper 40s afternoon temperatures will climb into the mid- and upper 60s around the county.

Sunday's thermometer readings will then take a jump, topping out near 80 degrees under sunny skies. Southwesterly winds will bring the warmer air into the area, but again folks will deal with gusts over 20 mph. For warmer weather enthusiasts a peek ahead at next week looks like those 80s will stick around!
