A foggy start to Monday, with afternoon showers and storms to follow

A stationary front is draped west to east over northern Virginia this Monday morning, allowing moist air to invade Mecklenburg county. Thick fog blankets the county as this post is being crafted, thanks to temperatures and dew points being equal. Those two parameters will grow apart as the morning warms, so the fog will dissipate - "mix out" - later today.

Today will feature mostly cloudy skies but warmer than average temperatures. As on Sunday, today's highs will again flirt with the 80 degree mark. A weak upper level disturbance will trigger showers and thunderstorms over southern Virginia this afternoon, with precipitation reaching the county near the dinner hour. The Storm Prediction Center has a Marginal Risk - level 1 of 5 - for severe weather over the region today:

Although no tornadoes are in the forecast a couple of rotating storms could produce large hail and damaging winds along with the always dangerous lightning. So be prepared to take shelter late this afternoon, especially if a warning is issued. And have several ways to receive warnings, with a NOAA Weather Radio being a great backup to cell phone apps and TV/radio broadcasts.

Tuesday's weather looks very similar to today's, with the potential for a foggy start followed by afternoon highs in the 80s and more thunderstorms. That stationary front will wiggle north and south over Virginia until the parent low pressure center finally arrives on Wednesday. Hump Day will be cloudy and damp, with more storms until a cold front scours away the moist air mass. Behind that boundary much cooler air will arrive for the latter half of the work week.
