Today - Friday - is Groundhog Day, when supposedly Punxatawney Phil provides a long range forecast that determines whether winter is over or not. Given the track record of the rodent (39% accuracy) a flip of a coin would yield better results.
In Mecklenburg county morning temperatures bottomed out around the 40 degree mark. A dry cold front pushing across Virginia today won't bring any precipitation. Skies will be mostly sunny this morning, but a batch of clouds will arrive from the north this afternoon as winds swing around out of that direction. Local thermometers will rise into the upper 50s for the day's high.
The weekend looks dry and sunny with seasonable temperatures. Afternoon highs will be near 50 on Saturday and a couple degrees above that for Sunday. Overnight lows will drop below freezing both nights accompanied by light winds, so frost will be a factor for folks venturing out in the early mornings.
The increased precipitation over the past couple of months has all but erased last fall's drought. One spot of Abnormally Dry conditions remains in far southwest Virginia, but the rest of the state including Mecklenburg county has emerged from those designations:
No precipitation looks likely over the next seven days.
