Quiet weather to begin the week

Today - Monday, President's Day - will kick off the week under quiet weather conditions. High pressure sprawling across the eastern third of the nation will make clear skies and light winds the order of the day for Mecklenburg county. This morning's visible satellite image illustrates the point, with Sunday's high clouds now off the coast, clear skies overhead Virginia, and leftover snow cover across the mountains and the Ohio valley:

Chase City won this morning's low temperature "competition" with a reading of 26 degrees. By this afternoon local thermometers will register highs in the low 50s, just about average at this point in February. Light northerly winds this morning will calm later today, giving rise to a pleasant afternoon under abundant sunshine.

Tonight's temperatures will again sag into the mid- and upper 20s by dawn tomorrow. Light breezes will swing around out of the east and northeast as the high pressure center eases off the coast. That wind direction may result in some low clouds from off the Atlantic waters Tuesday morning, but overall tomorrow looks to be sunny with afternoon highs again in the low 50s.

And those looking forward to longer daylight hours will note that sunset Tuesday evening will be at 6:00 p.m., the latest such occurrence since the switch back to Standard time in early November. Sunrise is also coming earlier than 7:00 a.m. at this point, making the daylight length more than 11 hours.
