A foggy start to Monday, then windy for Tuesday

Air temperatures and dew points around Mecklenburg county this Monday morning pretty much equal each other, with readings in the low 50s. That spells F-O-G across the area. Folks out and about in these conditions will be Driving in fog, which presents challenges all of its own. One item to emphasize is to keep headlights on at low beam.

The cold front which passed through the county Sunday afternoon is now stalled across North Carolina, arcing down across the Gulf Coast states. A low pressure center taking shape along the boundary over Georgia will scoot northeastward today, bringing a steady rain with it. An additional inch or more of liquid will collect in local gauges by the time the precipitation ends late tonight, with a rumble of thunder possible during the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile temperatures will hold steady today in the low 50s, not dropping much tonight. By dawn Tuesday that low pressure center will be off Virginia's Eastern Shore, beginning to morph into a full-fledged nor'easter. As that system strengthens and moves further away the clouds will part over Mecklenburg county tomorrow morning while the winds pick up. Tuesday promises to be very breezy as shown on this wind gust forecast graphic (numbers in mph):

Tuesday's official high temperature in the upper 50s will occur before dawn, with cooler - but not cold - air moving in via those gusty winds. Afternoon thermometer readings will then be in the low 50s under bright sunshine. By sunset tomorrow at 5:53 p.m. the winds will have calmed to less vigorous levels.

Happy Monday!
