The weather settles a bit after Sunday

Today, the last Sunday of January, will start the drying out process after a week of rather unsettled weather. Over the past 24 hours it looks like Chase City won the total liquid prize, with 1.19 inches recorded in the airport's gauge. Thermometers are registering the upper 40s across Mecklenburg county, but thank to a warm front stretching from Raleigh through Rocky Mount NC temperatures not far south of the state line are in the 60s.

Skies will be mostly cloudy this morning, with occasional breaks allowing the sun to make an appearance or two by the late morning hours. Local thermometers will top out in the upper 50s this afternoon. Another round of showers will push through the county after the lunch hour, the last gasp of precipitation from a surface low pressure which will cross the Tidewater area and move off the coast.

Recent rainfall across Virginia will keep rivers and streams running full, with the Dan River at South Boston looking to reach minor flood stage on Monday as shown here:

That crest will flow eastward and raise lake levels a bit during the early part of the work week.

Speaking of the work week most days will be dry and seasonable for Mecklenburg county, with Monday being rather breezy. The only exception will be the first half of Wednesday thanks to a "clipper system" diving southeast across the Mid-Atlantic states. More about that in Monday's blogpost.
