Under clear skies and calm winds Mecklenburg county temperatures this first Wednesday of 2024 sagged into the upper 20s. Those readings look to climb into the low 50s this afternoon, albeit under increasingly cloudy skies. A low pressure system tracking across the Gulf Coast states will create those clouds, accompanied by a slight chance of showers late tonight.
That system will scoot off the East Coast Thursday morning, leaving behind slowly clearing skies and northwesterly breezes. Temperatures will begin tomorrow near the freezing mark before climbing into the upper 40s during the afternoon hours. By dawn Friday local thermometer readings will drop into the low 20s for a very chilly start to the day.
Then the "fun" begins as Saturday approaches. Another low pressure system will approach from the southwest, sending plenty of Gulf moisture northward into Virginia. However, there won't be enough cold air available for a snow event in Mecklenburg county. Precipitation will begin late Friday night as a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain. It will then switch to all rain mid-morning Saturday as temperatures warm above freezing. Thus traveling early Saturday could be a bit tricky as local roads and sidewalks may be slippery.
To add insult to injury for snow lovers the follow-on storm system early next week will also bring plenty of rain. And just to illustrate how active the weather pattern is becoming check out this very colorful graphic from NOAA's Weather Prediction Center:
Friday's blogpost will take a closer look at the timing and placement of this weekend's wintry stuff. Meanwhile, Happy Wednesday!
