Friday's 80s may be the final gasp of summer

Today - Friday - may well be the last day of 2026 to experience summer-like conditions in Mecklenburg County. Given that the forecast high in the upper 80s is a full fifteen degrees above the mid-October average that's not a wild thought. A warm front pushing northward this morning will take the low clouds with it, and warm southwesterly winds will gust up to 20 mph.

Sunshine will eventually break through near the lunch hour. Then dinnertime will see more clouds move in ahead of a strong cold front. That boundary will bring chances of showers and even a rumble of thunder this evening. Winds will swap around out of the north as much cooler air invades the region.

Saturday will begin cloudy, cooler, and damp. After morning temperatures in the low 50s the afternoon high will only top out in the mid-50s. Clouds will stick around through the early afternoon hours, and local rain gauges will collect a quarter- to a half-inch of liquid by the time precipitation ends. Northerly winds will gust up to 25 mph for that true feeling of autumn.

Sunday morning temperatures will dip to the 40ยบ mark on local thermometers, and some sites could experience the upper 30s(!). Given that winds will still be stirring the air, frost isn't expected. The latter weekend day will be sunny but brisk, with highs in the upper 50s to go along with more gusty north winds.

Meanwhile, the drought conditions across much of Virginia have improved somewhat. The same can't be said locally, as this week's Drought Monitor looks very similar to last week's in Mecklenburg County (at the black star):

Will there be more rain next week? Stay tuned!
