Temperature swings and some mixed precipitation for the weekend

This Friday morning local thermometers dipped to 19º at Clarksville, Boydton, and Chase City, with South Hill being the "warm" spot at 22º. The day will feature a slight warmup as high pressure slides off the coast, allowing winds to turn around out of the southwest and bring in somewhat milder air. Today will be overall sunny with highs in the mid-40s.

On Saturday a storm system will cross the Great Lakes region, dragging another cold front with it. Ahead of the boundary light rain showers are possible tomorrow morning across Mecklenburg County, with partly sunny skies the remainder of the day. Afternoon highs will reach the low 50s accompanied by gusty south winds.

Then, wavering forecast models indicate - with a fair amount of uncertainty - that Sunday could bring some actual snow across eastern Virginia. A "wrinkle" along the aforementioned cold front will result in a low pressure system just off the East Coast. The track of the low center and the intersection of moisture with cold air are still somewhat in doubt, but it appears that at least a dusting white stuff could arrive early Sunday morning.

This graphic shows NWS Wakefield's expected forecast amounts:

Temperatures Sunday look to be in the 30s, so the snow isn't likely to greatly affect street or road conditions. Still, maybe this will scratch the itch of snow lovers during this mostly dry stretch of winter.
