An early week cooldown with wintry weather possible later on?

This weekend brought both warmth and much-needed precipitation to Mecklenburg County. Local rain gauges registered over an inch of liquid west of I-85, creating sharp rises in stream flows as shown here:

Temperatures today (Sunday) are actually at their maximum this morning behind last night's cold front passage. Northwesterly winds gusting over 30 mph at times will pour in colder air, resulting in thermometer readings which will drop the rest of the day. And, as the base of an upper level trough passes through, there could be some brief showers between one and three o'clock this afternoon.

By sunset - already pushed back to 5:18 p.m. in Clarksville - temperatures will have sagged to the 40ยบ mark on their way down to the upper 20s by dawn Monday. Tomorrow will then feature sunshine under bright blue skies and afternoon highs in the upper 40s. Tuesday looks similar but with temperatures climbing back into the mid-50s.

Wednesday night through Thursday then brings a fair amount of uncertainty to the forecast. Another shot of cold air will arrive while a coastal storm looks to take shape. If these weather factors phase (i.e. join forces) at the right time and place there could be some wintry mischief for Mecklenburg County. At the moment this is NOT a certainty, but it does mean folks should stay tuned to forecasts by both NWS Wakefield and local broadcast meteorologists.

Happy Sunday!
