Friday flakes, Saturday sunshine, and Sunday Siberian chill

This Friday morning an Alberta Clipper is approaching from the west, with the result being a chilly start to the day with scattered snow flakes. These systems are accompanied by cold air but are usually starved for moisture. Thus the current setup will feature "conversational" flakes today, with only about a 30% chance of as much as an inch of snow accumulation across Mecklenburg County.

Temperatures will struggle to rise much from early morning readings, topping out only in the upper 30s this afternoon under cloudy skies. Saturday will then feature a weather turnaround, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures rising into the low 50s. That's the average high for the second weekend of December, a level not achieved often so far this month.

Enjoy those average temperatures tomorrow. A strong cold front will then blast through the area Saturday night, opening the door for a true Arctic air invasion Sunday afternoon. The latter weekend day looks to begin under cloud cover, likely with some light rain or snow showers before skies clear near the lunch hour. After a high in the low 40s strong northwesterly winds gusting up to 25 mph will usher in much colder and drier air.

The combination of colder air and blustery winds will result in air temperatures plunging into the teens by Monday morning. Wind chills will bottom out in the single digits. This graphic shows the broad swath of hazardous cold across the U.S. on Sunday and Monday:

The good news? This blast of "Arcticness" may be the last for a while as the overall weather pattern appears to shift to a warmer regime per forecast models.
