Mostly dry and mostly sunny for the weekend

This - Friday - morning's low temperatures around the region were some of the chilliest so far this month as seen on this graphic:

The somewhat warmer 44º temperature recorded at the east end of Buggs Island / Kerr Lake can be explained by the proximity to the relatively warm lake water. However, the reading at the Boydton weather station (circled in blue) seems to be due to some pre-dawn wind gusts. That stirring of the surface air briefly mixed out the overnight temperature inversion, warming the surface air a few degrees in that locality.

The remainder of today will be sunny and cooler than average, with afternoon highs topping out in the mid-60s amid light northerly winds. The high pressure center controlling local conditions will ease off the East Coast tonight, allowing winds to swap around out of the south. That will usher more moisture and clouds into the area.

The clouds will act as a blanket, keeping temperatures from dropping as far tonight. Thus Saturday morning will begin with local thermometer readings in the upper 40s under mostly cloudy skies. As tomorrow progresses those south winds will pump in warmer and moister air. Skies will become partly to mostly sunny as afternoon highs reach the mid-70s.

A strong cold front will cross the Appalachians on Sunday. Those southerly winds will grow in strength ahead of it, gusting up to 25 mph. Skies will begin the day mostly sunny but cloud cover will increase as the boundary approaches. Afternoon temperatures will again top out in the mid-70s. The front itself looks to cross through after dark Sunday, with only slight amounts of rain (less than 0.1") expected.
