Typical August weather returns for the work week

Overnight temperatures around Mecklenburg County dropped into the low 60s early this morning (Sunday), providing some good sleeping weather. This was thanks to clear skies and relatively dry air by August standards. Skies today will continue to be clear and sunny, with afternoon highs climbing into the mid-80s. That's still a few degrees below average for this date.

Overall this week will gradually return to more August-like conditions. The extended cold air damming wedge of last week is gone, pushed out by a ridge in the upper atmosphere:

A summertime ridge across the eastern half of the U.S. usually means warmer and more humid conditions for Virginia. Thus afternoon highs will climb from the mid-80s to near 90ยบ by midweek, accompanied by stickier air. That combination will translate into daily chances of showers and storms beginning Monday. No widespread severe weather is expected, however.

Happy Sunday!
