A much anticipated cold front crossed Mecklenburg County during the wee hours this Friday morning. It brought two rounds of showers and storms to many spots, the first arriving just after the dinner hour last evening ahead of the boundary. The second round came with the front's passage. Local rain gauges - except for the airport in South Hill - recorded overall totals of just over one inch of liquid.
However, the bulk of the rain dumped on areas outside those rain gauges. Here are the radar estimated totals (from the RadarScope app):
This morning's temperatures and dew points don't yet reflect the front's passage. It will take until tonight for drier air to filter in via northerly winds. Meanwhile, temperatures today will top out in the low 80s under mostly cloudy skies. There is a chance of more afternoon showers or storms thanks to an upper level disturbance sweeping through later today. For this first weekend of August both Saturday and Sunday then look to bring very pleasant conditions. Partly to mostly sunny skies and northerly breezes will be accompanied by temperatures ranging from morning lows in the 60s to afternoon highs in the lower 80s. Dew points - and thus humidity levels - will also be much lower. The contrast to the recent heat and humidity will feel amazing!
More good news is that the lower temperatures and humidity levels look to continue through much of next week. Heat wave? What heat wave??
