The recent bout with hot and sticky conditions will ease off after today (Wednesday). A "cold" front - blue line added below - is currently draped across Virginia as shown on this morning's surface map:
That boundary will wobble through Mecklenburg County this afternoon as the upper level trough guiding it slowly pushes off the East Coast. Another round of showers and storms will keep things damp and cloudy, but nothing severe is expected. A dearth of sunshine will hold down today's high temperatures to the 80 degree mark. Skies will should clear enough to allow a view of the sunset, which occurs at 8:37 p.m. this evening. The air behind this boundary is drier than the soggy mess that's been in place for quite a while. Lower dew points will slowly filter into the area Thursday, gradually lowering the humidity to more reasonable levels by tomorrow night. Meanwhile local thermometers will top out at or near 90ยบ under mostly sunny skies on Thursday.
Independence Day activities will occur under sunny skies with light northerly winds. Morning temperatures will start in the upper 60s before again reaching that 90 degree mark during the afternoon. Both of those numbers are just about average for the first week in July. And for the evening fireworks this graphic applies (only time of the year it's useful!):
The weekend conditions look much the same with morning lows in the upper 60s and afternoon highs near 90. Sunny skies will prevail all weekend long, with no rain anticipated.
The next Mecklenburg County Weather blog post will be Sunday morning. Enjoy the holiday festivities!
