This Wednesday morning the cold front that approached Mecklenburg County from the west yesterday has stalled out nearby. That's typical this time of year, with the jet stream - the steering mechanism for cold fronts - having retreated northward to the Canadian border. The overall effect of this locally is a failure to push out the stickier air. A map of this morning's dew points (blue numbers) illustrates this:
The dotted green line is roughly the boundary between slightly drier air (dew points < 70º) and very sticky air (dew points >70º).That boundary will eventually just dissipate almost overhead. Thus today will continue to feel sticky with temperatures topping out in the upper 80s this afternoon. Morning clouds will gradually clear away leaving behind mostly sunny skies.
On Thursday that slightly drier air will finally work its way into Mecklenburg County, gradually lowering the "stickiness level". However, a compensating factor will be a rise in temperatures, with tomorrow's highs looking to reach the low 90s under sunny skies. That level of heat will continue into the weekend, accompanied by chances of showers and storms by Friday afternoon.
Summer's here!
