As a matter of fact, afternoon highs in the 80s return today - Good Friday - and will stick around for several days. The upper air pattern has flipped, and the recent cooler than average regime is departing Mecklenburg County as this blog entry is being written. After morning lows in the mid-40s today's temperatures will top out at or just above 80º this afternoon.
There is a price to pay, however. Scouring out the chill and replacing it with warmer air will come via brisk southerly winds, which will gust over 20 mph by late morning. But that wind direction will also boost dew points, alleviating the very dry feeling to the air as moisture is pumped into the area. Sunshine will prevail as skies will remain clear today and tonight.
The weekend then looks to be much warmer than average, with temperatures ranging from near 60º at dawn up to the mid-80s during both afternoons. Saturday's winds will remain gusty, but by Easter Sunday that will calm to a comfortable breeze. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny all weekend.
However, a cautionary note must be sounded for those anticipating weekend recreation on Buggs Island Lake / Kerr Reservoir. Water temperatures are still in the upper 50s, which can create hypothermia for folks who get into the water despite how warm the air feels. This graphic explains:
Have a safe and happy Easter weekend!
