Wet Friday with cooler temperatures on the way for the weekend

The warm front associated with a low pressure system currently over the Ohio valley is lifting north of Mecklenburg county this - Friday - morning. Rain out ahead of the warm front (a process known as overrunning) dampened the local area overnight, resulting in liquid totals ranging from 0.28" in Clarksville to 0.68" in Boydton. As of this writing there's a break in the rain across the county.

Skies will remain cloudy today. Despite a lack of sunshine temperatures will boost into the upper 60s this afternoon thanks to gusty southwest winds pushing warm moist air into the area. (A 70ยบ degree reading in a couple of spots isn't out of the question!) Then by late afternoon the trailing cold front will approach the county, bringing more rainfall by the dinner hour. Additional liquid totals of up to an inch can be expected before the precipitation ends after midnight.

Saturday then looks to be mostly sunny but cooler to begin the month of February. Temperatures will begin the day in the mid-40s, climbing into the mid-50s for daily highs. That's still a couple degrees above the average for the date. But as cooler air continues to flow into the region via northerly winds local thermometers will dive back into the upper 20s by dawn Sunday.

Then, yet another cold air damming setup will take shape on Sunday. Strong high pressure over New England will force cold air southward over the Piedmont. The latter weekend day will thus feature partly sunny skies with afternoon highs in the upper 40s. This version of a typically annoying weather feature looks to be short-lived, with most forecast models calling for temperatures to soar back into the 60s on Monday. We'll see...
