Today - Sunday - began with temperatures in the mid- to upper 20s, just about average morning lows for late January in Mecklenburg county. Although skies will be only partly sunny today local thermometers will boost into the low 50s this afternoon, again just about average. This warmer (and welcome!) regime looks to hold sway throughout the upcoming work week.
Instead of the sharp north and south orientation of the past couple of weeks the jet stream is now in "zonal flow", i.e. moving west-to-east. That will keep the harsh Arctic air north of the region, and it will also keep moisture from pushing northward. Thus this week also looks to be mainly dry as air temperatures continue to moderate. There may even be some 60s by midweek!
The dryness is beginning to add up again, unfortunately. The latest Drought Monitor shows several Southside Virginia counties - including Mecklenburg - in a Moderate Drought situation:
Hopefully the rest of the winter into the spring can make up for this aridity with more rainfall. Otherwise agricultural and landscaping interests could be in for a tough summer!
