Welcome to (meteorological) winter

Today - Sunday - delineates several calendar changes. It's the beginning of December, during which Mecklenburg county average high temperatures start the month in the upper 50s before dropping to 50 degrees by the end. Secondly, yesterday (November 30th) marked the official end of the Atlantic hurricane season as the tropics settle down. And finally, meteorological winter begins today.

A comparison of astronomical vs. meteorological seasons is shown here:

Given the recent cold air invasions it's beginning to feel like winter as well. This morning's lows around the county registered at 28 degrees at several spots. Meanwhile a thin cloud deck will filter the available sunshine, making it difficult for local thermometers to reach the 50 degree mark today. An upper level disturbance is approaching from the west, stirring up gusty southwest winds and possibly fostering a brief shower near the dinner hour.

Coupled with that disturbance another cold front will sweep across Virginia this evening, reinforcing the cold air. As a result the work week looks to remain chilly with afternoon highs most days in the 40s. Thursday will be the sole exception as a short warmup into the mid-50s occurs. On the flip side morning lows will be very cold this week, with thermometers Wednesday morning looking like they'll dive into the teens(!).

Bundle up!
