Yep! A strong storm system accompanied by plenty of moisture will bring the threat of severe weather to Mecklenburg county today (Sunday). This Storm Prediction Center graphic illustrates:
The yellow shaded Slight Risk - level 2 of 5 - is confined to areas south of Virginia Route 40, with the dark green Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) covering most of the remainder of the state. The chief threat to Mecklenburg looks to be strong straight line winds as a squall line of storms moves through during the mid-afternoon hours. Although a Tornado Watch has already been posted for western North Carolina, the probability of a tornado near the county is low. However, keep in mind that a severe thunderstorm can create its own havoc with strong winds and heavy rain. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued take shelter in an interior room away from windows. (Keep your weather warning sources at hand!)
Temperatures today will make a run at 70º as warm moist air is pumped northward via gusty south winds. The actual cold front associated with this storm system will then pass through this evening after dark, swapping winds around out of the west. Monday's weather looks to be quite a bit calmer behind this boundary, with sunny skies and afternoon highs in the low 60s.
The remainder of the week will bring a gradual cool down as a series of cold fronts crosses the region. Tuesday - New Years' Eve - may feature some light showers, but the rest of this week looks dry. By the latter part of the period temperatures will once again be below average, with highs on Saturday struggling to climb above the 40º mark.
