Blustery entrance to the weekend

The strong autumn cold front which whooshed through Mecklenburg county Wednesday evening was the opening act of an intense upper level low pressure system. That weather feature passed north of the area and is centered over eastern New York state as this is being written. This water vapor satellite loop illustrates, with yellow representing dry air while blue and white indicate moist air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere:

Spokes of upper level disturbances (additional "cold fronts") rotating around this center will provide periodic surges of additional strong winds and cold air.

Today - Friday - will continue to be colder than average with afternoon highs in the upper 40s to near 50 around the county. Westerly winds will blow at 10-15 mph, gusting up to 25 mph at times. Cloud cover will increase late this afternoon as another of those spokes nears the area. Instead of winds subsiding after sunset the blustery conditions will actually become more raucous after dark. Gusts up to 30 mph can be expected this evening.

Temperatures will sag into the upper 30s by dawn tomorrow. Saturday will then feature more breeziness, with winds gusting over 20 mph under mostly sunny skies. Afternoon temperatures will top out in the upper 50s as the air mass warms a bit. The upper level low will have scooted northeast into the Canadian maritimes by Saturday evening, allowing Mecklenburg county winds to calm down considerably. Under clear skies and calm conditions temperatures will drop into the mid-30s by dawn Sunday.

Sunday will then feel much more comfortable as temperatures climb into the low 60s during the afternoon, close to the average at this point in November. Winds will be lighter in the 5-7 mph range and skies look to be mostly sunny for the final Sunday before Thanksgiving Day.
