Dissipating remnants of Helene will dominate the early part of the week

The incredible impacts of Hurricane Helene continue to affect folks from the Florida Big Bend area up through Appalachia. The former are dealing with the aftermath of Category 4 winds and tremendous storm surge while the latter are reeling from damage caused by record amounts of rainfall. And that's not to mention the plethora of tornado warnings issued within 50 miles of Mecklenburg county (including a powerful EF-3 tornado in Rocky Mount NC).

Locally a mostly sunny and pleasant Saturday has given way to a cloudy and more humid Sunday. Coupled with a weakening frontal system the remnants of Helene are still affecting local weather with its leftover tropical moisture. This water vapor satellite loop shows the center of circulation spinning around over Kentucky this morning (blue shade = drier air while yellow = moist air).

Skies today will be mostly cloudy although there will likely be some peeks of sunshine. Showers and thunderstorms will dot the landscape with rain totals on the order of a tenth of an inch for most locales. Temperatures will top out near 80 degrees with sticky air on this last Sunday of September.

As the center of Helene's remnant circulation slides eastward across Virginia both Monday and Tuesday look to be cloudy and damp. Rainfall through Wednesday morning is forecast to total up to perhaps an inch in local gauges. The good news? The latter half of the week appears to be sunny and pleasant again after this remnant moisture pushes off the coast.

Keep the folks suffering from injuries, property losses, and isolation in your thoughts, and look for opportunities to help out any way possible.
