After Monday a scarcity of sunshine for the week

Today - Monday - began with temperatures in the low to middle 60s around Mecklenburg county under mostly cloudy skies. But the afternoon will feature some sunshine, allowing temperatures to climb into the upper 70s once again. High pressure hanging on by its fingernails along the East Coast is blocking the forward progress of the next weather system approaching from the west.

The dividing line between these two weather features is a warm front, which is aligned along the Virginia / West Virginia border as this post is being written. The showers and storms which will dot the landscape of western portions of the Old Dominion today look to hold off from dampening Mecklenburg county until late tonight. Even so, local rain amounts by dawn Tuesday will only total up to a tenth of an inch or so.

Tomorrow then looks to be mostly cloudy with afternoon highs topping out in the low 70s. Scattered showers will add  a bit to those rain totals, but Tuesday won't be a total washout. Tomorrow night will feature heavier showers and a few thunderstorms as the aforementioned warm front approaches and dissipates nearby.

Meanwhile the average peak of the Atlantic hurricane season has passed as shown here:

However, that doesn't mean the threat of tropical trouble is anywhere near finished for the year. A storm is forming in the Caribbean and looks like it'll make landfall somewhere on the Gulf Coast later this week. At the moment the track inland is forecast to curve westward (vs. the normal northeast movement) as another strong high pressure blocks its path. Still, by Friday some tropically induced rains could reach the Mecklenburg area.
