The 90s are in town to stay a while

Saturday's high temperatures topped out in the mid-90s around Mecklenburg county. Today (Sunday) those values will boost a couple degrees higher at all locations. Coupled with the sticky humidity the heat index will exceed triple digits this afternoon. That has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Heat Advisory from 11:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. today.

A "cold" front will push across the Appalachians today and tonight, triggering some showers and thunderstorms locally late this afternoon into the evening hours. Those will be hit or miss, however, so don't count on plentiful rainfall to alleviate the increasingly dry conditions around the county. The air mass behind this boundary is not cold at all, but it is a bit less humid than the soggy blanket currently in place. Thus Monday will continue to be hot but slightly less sticky (with no Heat Advisories).

Daily high temperatures through the upcoming work week will reach the 90s as this heat wave persists. The next chance at showers or storms won't be until Thursday when another front crosses the region. Meanwhile, this is officially Lightning Safety Awareness Week. I'll post a couple of graphics regarding this emphasis later this week, but in the meantime here is "very important" information about this weather phenomenon (spelling IS important, isn't it?):
