A somewhat stormy midweek is in store

Western sections of Mecklenburg county received a lot of rain this past weekend. Unfortunately it looks like more of the same is on the near horizon. Chances of showers and storms today - Wednesday - are low but tonight into Thursday could be rather wet again. Thus the Weather Prediction Center has the county (at the black star) shaded in this Excessive Rain graphic for tomorrow:

Today will be reminiscent of a hot and muggy mid-summer day. Temperatures will top out this afternoon around the 90 degree mark while dew points hover in the sticky mid- to upper 60s. The Storm Prediction Center has Mecklenburg county under a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather today. However, the overall storm coverage doesn't look too impressive thanks to the lack of a "trigger" such as a cold front. Still, residents should keep an eye to the sky today.

Late tonight is when conditions will really go downhill as remnants of an MCS (mesoscale convective system) cross the Appalachians into Virginia. In addition to the potential for heavy rain there could also be some thunderstorms during the early morning hours. Tomorrow will be a bit less hot - but still sticky! - given more cloud cover. Local thermometers will climb to the mid-80s Thursday afternoon.

Typically a morning MCS passage squashes convection for the rest of that day. Even so, since the Storm Prediction Center again has Mecklenburg county in a Slight Risk of severe weather it would be wise to keep abreast of changing weather conditions again Thursday. NOAA weather radio, cellphone apps, and local TV/radio should all be utilized to receive warning information.

The good news? The weekend looks dry, sunny, and much more pleasant temperatures.
