The wild midweek weather didn't produce any severe reports in Mecklenburg county. However, the main culprit for those conditions - an upper level low pressure - strengthened into a full-fledged surface nor'easter after it emerged off the New England coast. The strong wind field around that storm system produced gusty northwest winds locally.
Those winds ushered in cooler than average temperatures, which will remain in place today (Friday) through the weekend despite strong April sunshine. This afternoon's high temperatures will struggle to reach the 60 degree mark, which is ten degrees below the average for this date. By dawn Saturday those readings will drop into the mid-30s, accompanied by continued northwesterly winds.
Saturday's temperatures will also struggle to reach the 60 degree mark as the cooler air continues to pour into the county. Then tomorrow night the winds will slacken a bit, allowing temperatures to drop even more under clear skies. Sunday morning holds the potential for a frost or freeze (see graphic). Thus sensitive vegetation may need to be protected.
As that nor'easter finally moves away from the East Coast Sunday will begin a warming trend. Local thermometers will top out in the low 60s that afternoon, still several degrees below the average for the first weekend of April. But a peek into next week looks like the 70s will return. That's good news!
