Monday will be a breezy start to a sunny and warmer week

Winds gusted up to 35 mph at several Mecklenburg county sites on Sunday, keeping the outdoors feeling cooler than the air temperatures would suggest. Today - Monday - westerly breezes will continue to gust over 20 mph as the strong low pressure (a nor'easter) slowly pulls away from New England. The pressure gradient is pretty tight between that low center (red "L's") and the high pressure system (blue "H") which is building in across the Mid-Atlantic states.

Local thermometers will top out in the upper 50s this afternoon, close to the average high of 60 at this point in March. Meanwhile the shift to Daylight Saving Time pushed sunrise to 7:31 a.m. this morning, while sunset will occur at 7:18 p.m. The former will continue to happen earlier with the latter happening later each day between now and the summer solstice.

As the winds relax tonight under clear skies temperatures will drop into the mid-30s around the county. After that cool beginning Tuesday will then bring much more pleasant conditions, with clear skies, light winds, and highs near the 70 degree mark. The remainder of the work week will continue to warm, with afternoon highs climbing into the upper 70s by the latter half of the week. The next chance of rain looks to delay until Friday afternoon, giving the soil a chance to dry out.

A note: There will be no Weather Blog entry on Wednesday. The next blogpost is scheduled for Friday morning.
