Another warm weekend day before a cool-down

Today (St. Patrick's Day) will feature the last above average temperature day of the recent warm spell. A strong surface cold front is already crossing the West Virginia / Virginia border as this is being written. Ahead of said boundary Mecklenburg county will enjoy afternoon temperatures in the low 70s under partly sunny skies.

Southwesterly winds will pick up strength as that front approaches later today, gusting up to 20 mph at times. The boundary will finally pass through the county this evening, and the breezes will swap around out of the northwest. Monday will begin with temperatures in the low 40s, with local thermometer readings topping out only in the mid-50s for daily highs.

Temperatures will then tumble Monday night in a reminder that late March can still bring a threat of frost. This Weather Prediction Center graphic indicates that potential (along with the possibility of heavy rain later this week):

Tuesday morning looks to begin with thermometer readings at or below freezing around the county, so protect any sensitive vegetation that has been enjoying the recent warmth. Afternoon highs will again be in the mid-50s, accompanied by gusty westerly winds.

The next Weather Blog entry will be posted Wednesday. By then another cold front will be knocking on the door. Meanwhile:
